President John Dramani Mahama has returned to Ghana following an official visit to France and is set to chair an emergency Cabinet meeting on Thursday, April 9, to address the recent spike in fuel prices.
The meeting is expected to focus on strategies to ease the burden on households and businesses as petroleum costs continue to rise, largely driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Sources within government indicate that the President is pushing for immediate interventions to cushion citizens from the growing economic pressure caused by the price hikes.
Fuel prices in Ghana saw a sharp increase beginning April 1, 2026. Petrol rose by approximately 15% to GH¢13.30 per litre, while diesel surged by about 19% to GH¢17.10 per litre for the April 1–15 pricing window, according to the National Petroleum Authority.
Authorities are expected to outline policy responses following the Cabinet deliberations.
