Mahama Announces New Runway for Sunyani Airport Expansion

New 2.4km runway to accommodate larger aircraft and improve regional connectivity

Story Highlights
  • Government will construct a 2.4-kilometre runway at Sunyani Airport to allow commercial and bigger planes to operate.
  • The existing 1.5km runway is too short for jet aircraft, limiting air travel to the Bono Region.
  • Traditional authorities have released land for the project, with plans in place for construction to begin after sod-cutting.

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to expand the Sunyani Airport with the construction of a new runway designed to accommodate larger aircraft and enhance air connectivity in the Bono Region.

The project aims to improve access to air travel while boosting economic activity by enabling commercial flights to operate more efficiently in and out of Sunyani.

Speaking during the Resetting Ghana Tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the President noted that the current airport infrastructure—particularly the runway—is inadequate, as it is too short to support jet operations.

“The old Sunyani Airport has stalled. The runway is only about 1.5 kilometres. Because of that, planes that can land in Kumasi cannot come here,” he stated.

Mr. Mahama explained that although there were initial considerations to extend the existing runway, surrounding developments have made that option unfeasible.

“That requires that we expand the runway, but because of the buildings in the area, we may not be able to work on it. So, we decided to build a new runway for the airport,” he added.

He disclosed that traditional authorities have already released land for the project, and designs are in place for a new 2.4-kilometre runway capable of handling larger aircraft.

“The chiefs have already given out lands for that. The design exists, and the new runway will be about 2.4 kilometres to be able to land any plane of any size,” he said.

The President further indicated that government will, at the appropriate time, return to officially cut sod for the commencement of construction.
