Leicester City Docked Six Points for Financial Rule Breaches

Championship club falls to 20th after EFL sanctions over profit and sustainability rule breaches.

Story Highlights
  • Leicester loses six points, dropping to 20th in the Championship.
  • Sanction follows profit and sustainability rule breaches from 2021–2024.
  • Club calls deduction “disproportionate” and reviews options for appeal.

Leicester City has been hit with a six-point deduction by the English Football League (EFL) for breaching financial regulations, plunging the club closer to relegation from the Championship.

The points deduction takes effect immediately, dropping Leicester from 17th to 20th place, leaving them just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

The sanction stems from a profit and sustainability rules (PSR) breach covering the three seasons up to 2023-24, for which the Premier League charged the club in May.

Leicester, relegated from the Premier League last season, are also navigating a managerial void after sacking Marti Cifuentes in January.

In a statement, the club expressed disappointment, describing the punishment as “disproportionate” despite a reduction from the initial sanction proposed by the Premier League.

“While the commission’s findings significantly reduced the unprecedented scale of the sanction originally sought, the recommendation remains disproportionate and does not fully consider the mitigating factors we presented,” the statement read.

Leicester confirmed they are reviewing the EFL’s decision and evaluating all available options, emphasizing their commitment to constructive engagement and fair treatment in safeguarding their sporting ambitions this season.
