At least 15 people have died after a boat carrying dozens of passengers capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, with rescue efforts continuing, authorities have confirmed.
Police said the vessel had 90 passengers and five crew members on board when it overturned on Tuesday. However, the actual number of people aboard remains unclear, with official ticket records suggesting that more passengers may have been on the boat.
The police said the vessel was struck by a strong wave before it capsized.
Zimbabwe’s Civil Protection Unit (CPU) reported that ticket sales indicated 114 adults were on board. It added that there could have been an unknown number of children who were below the age requiring tickets.
So far, 77 passengers have been rescued, while 15 bodies have been recovered. Two funeral parlours have been assigned to collect the bodies.
Questions have also been raised over whether the vessel was overloaded.
