Several structures at the La Pleasure Beach in Accra have been demolished as the Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Police Service carry out a joint operation to clear the area.

The exercise involves personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service.

Military personnel overseeing the operation have directed vendors and businesses operating within the resort area to vacate the premises to allow the demolition exercise to continue.

The exercise reportedly began in the early hours of Friday, October 2, after security personnel arrived at the facility at about 4:00 a.m. and ordered residents and workers to leave the area.

Some occupants said they were caught off guard by the demolition, describing the exercise as unexpected.

Several structures have since been completely demolished, while others have been partially pulled down.

The exercise has also triggered concerns from La Dadekotopon MP Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, who confronted military personnel at the site.

The MP questioned why the exercise was being carried out without prior communication to her, saying she had previously been assured by government that the structures would not be demolished.

She said she had engaged relevant authorities over the matter and was surprised to arrive at the site to find military personnel conducting the demolition.

Rita Naa Odoley Sowah also raised concerns about the manner in which the operation was being conducted, alleging that some military personnel were firing shots and wielding firearms while clearing the area.

She questioned the need for what she described as a forceful approach to the exercise.

The demolition has heightened tensions at the site, with affected vendors and businesses being asked to vacate the area as the clearance operation continues.
