Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has called on religious leaders across the country to intensify efforts to promote peace, tolerance and national cohesion.
The IGP disclosed that individuals allegedly involved in the recent incident in which a pastor was slapped had been arrested and were currently on bail.
He, however, stressed that law enforcement alone could not guarantee lasting peace if citizens failed to embrace tolerance, dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
Mr Yohuno therefore appealed to Christian and Muslim leaders to help address growing tensions and concerns surrounding religious comments to promote peace, unity and stability in Ghana.
The engagement brought together key religious and peace stakeholders, including the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Chairman of the Pentecostals and Charismatic Council, National Chief Imam, President of the Christian Council of Ghana, Chairman of the National Peace Council and Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission.
The IGP cautioned that several African countries had suffered devastating conflicts fuelled by religious tensions and divisions.
He urged Ghanaians to consciously protect the peace the country enjoys by promoting mutual respect, tolerance, dialogue and harmony among people of different faiths.
