Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United, with an option to extend for a further season, reportedly agreeing to a pay cut to remain at Old Trafford.
The 33-year-old central defender, whose previous deal was set to expire at the end of this season, joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million—a world-record fee for a defender at the time. Since then, he has made 266 appearances for the club, helping secure the League Cup in 2022–23 and the FA Cup in the following season.
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day,” Maguire said. “I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.”
Maguire’s tenure at United has seen highs and lows. He was named captain just five months after arriving under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, faced criticism despite regular selection, and was later stripped of the captaincy under Erik ten Hag in July 2023. He briefly agreed to a move to West Ham United but ultimately chose to stay.
He has recently enjoyed a resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick, starting all 10 matches since January, after struggling for game time under previous bosses.
“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us,” Maguire added.
Jason Wilcox described him as “the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad,” praising his mentality and resilience on and off the pitch.
