The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has announced that the Government of Ghana is encouraging citizens and friends of Ghana both locally and abroad to dedicate every Wednesday to wearing Fugu, also known as Batakari, in its various styles and designs.
The declaration, signed by Minister Ablah Dzifa Gomashie on February 10, forms part of efforts to preserve, promote and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage while projecting the country’s identity proudly on the global stage.
In a statement, the Ministry said the initiative reflects a collective national commitment to safeguarding Ghanaian culture and showcasing traditional fashion. It urged the public to embrace Fugu in its diverse forms and complement it with its distinctive accessories.
The Ministry noted that the weekly celebration of Fugu is expected to deliver significant social and economic benefits across the country. It explained that increased patronage will empower local weavers, designers, artisans and traders along the value chain, while creating jobs and expanding business opportunities nationwide.
Government believes that the widespread adoption of Fugu every Wednesday will strengthen national unity, boost the creative economy and serve as a strong symbol of Ghana’s cultural pride, confidence and self-expression.
