Ghana to Champion Continental Integration Under AU Chairmanship – Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana will use its expected 2027 African Union chairmanship to advance continental integration, accelerate AfCFTA implementation and promote peace and security across Africa.

President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana will use its expected chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027 to promote deeper continental integration, peace and security across Africa.
Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, September 24, 2026, President Mahama said Ghana would prioritise the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and efforts to address conflicts on the continent.
He said Ghana’s leadership of the AU would also seek to strengthen Africa’s collective voice on the global stage.
“In January 2027, Ghana will probably assume the chairmanship of the African Union. I wish to serve notice that we intend to use our AU chairmanship to champion continental integration, accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, push for peace and security in all the conflict zones of Africa and ensure that Africa speaks on the global stage with one resolute, undivided and confident voice,” he said.
President Mahama said deeper continental integration was essential to advancing Africa’s shared economic and political interests.
He also stressed the importance of accelerating the implementation of the AfCFTA to deepen trade and economic cooperation among African countries.
According to him, Ghana’s expected role at the helm of the AU would provide an opportunity to advance issues critical to Africa’s development, peace and collective interests.
