President John Dramani Mahama, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has confirmed the deployment of Ghana Army engineers to assist hurricane-affected communities in Jamaica, describing the mission as a testament to Ghana’s strong ties with the Caribbean nation and the broader international community.

A team comprising eight officers and 45 soldiers has been dispatched to help build shelters and support reconstruction efforts following the recent natural disaster.

During a farewell parade at the Jubilee Lounge of Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday, December 17, President Mahama urged the troops to uphold dignity, professionalism, and teamwork, while raising the Ghanaian flag high abroad.

“Your actions will shape how Ghana is perceived internationally. Serve with integrity, respect local authorities and communities, protect one another, and return home safely,” he advised.

President Mahama also expressed appreciation to the United States for providing airlift support to transport the troops to Jamaica, calling their assistance critical to the success of the mission.

“When we conceptualized this mission, one of the main challenges was transportation. The United States stepped forward to provide the airlift, and we are grateful for their support,” he added.

The humanitarian mission not only aims to provide immediate relief to hurricane-affected communities but also strengthens bilateral relations between Ghana and Jamaica, showcasing the country’s commitment to international solidarity and cooperation.
