President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his deep respect for Lincoln University, despite its last-minute decision to withdraw an honorary doctorate previously slated to be awarded to him.

The institution cancelled the conferment just days before the ceremony, following concerns raised within its community over Mahama’s perceived position on LGBTQ issues.

Speaking to the Ghanaian community in Philadelphia on Thursday, March 26, 2026, Mahama highlighted the enduring historical and symbolic relationship between Ghana and the university.

“Regardless of the differences that may have emerged, Lincoln University holds a unique place in my heart. It is the institution that helped shape our first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, during his intellectual and Pan-African journey. For Ghanaians, it remains sacred ground and a vital part of our heritage,” he stated.

He stressed that the longstanding connection between Ghana and the university would not be diminished by the recent development.

“Lincoln University is inseparable from Ghana’s story, and we will continue to regard it with the utmost respect,” he added.
