Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been formally inducted as a Lay Canon at St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral within the Anglican Diocese of Koforidua.
A Lay Canon is a distinguished title in the Anglican Church conferred on non-ordained individuals in recognition of their outstanding service and commitment. Recipients are honoured for their contributions to church leadership and community work, although they do not hold clerical authority.
The installation ceremony was led by the Rt. Rev. Felix Odei Annancy and drew a host of senior Anglican clergy and notable figures, including former Archbishop of the Province of West Africa, Most Rev. Gershon Allottey Okine, Most Rev. Daniel Yinkah Sarfo, and the Anglican Bishop of Tema, Rt. Rev. George Neequaye.
The event attracted a large audience made up of congregants, traditional leaders, lawmakers, and former government officials, with church leaders describing the occasion as both historic and celebratory.
During the ceremony, Akufo-Addo swore an oath of allegiance, committing himself to serve the Church faithfully and uphold its values.
He also pledged to adhere to the doctrines and discipline of the Anglican Diocese of Koforidua, in accordance with the constitution of the Church of the Province of West Africa.
Special prayers were offered for him, asking for divine guidance and strength in his new role. Rt. Rev. Annancy noted that the honour recognises Akufo-Addo’s dedication and service, encouraging him to continue contributing to the mission of the Church.
The installation underscores the enduring link between faith and public service, as the former President assumes a new role within the Anglican community.
