Drivers’ Unions Threaten 20% Fare Hike Over VIP Price Increases

Drivers’ unions across the country, led by regional chairmen of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana), have threatened to increase transport fares by 20% following what they describe as unilateral fare hikes by some VIP bus operators.

The unions argue that the price adjustments were done without consultation with key stakeholders in the transport sector, creating what they describe as unfair competition and tension within the industry.

They also issued a one-week ultimatum to the Minister for Transport, leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and the national leadership of C-DAG, demanding urgent intervention to reverse the situation.

In a statement dated May 19, 2026, and signed by several regional chairmen, the group insisted that the actions of VIP operators are worsening financial pressure on commercial drivers.

“It is unfair for one section of the transport sector to increase fares at will while commercial drivers operating within the cities and districts continue to bear the rising cost of fuel, spare parts, taxes, and vehicle maintenance without any corresponding adjustments,” the statement said.

The unions further warned that the lack of regulatory action is creating confusion and tension among commuters and transport operators nationwide.

They cautioned that if authorities fail to act by Monday, all affiliated unions will implement a 20% increase in transport fares across the country.
