Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31.

The former Vice President secured a resounding win with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent, positioning him to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Trailing him were Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who came second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who placed third with 36,303 votes (18.53%).

The other contenders included Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum in fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02%) and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong in fifth with 402 votes (0.21%).

The primary involved participation from over 211,000 delegates nationwide, casting their votes at 333 polling centres across all 275 constituencies. Voting was conducted under tight security and closely monitored by party officials to ensure a transparent and credible process.

Early collation indicated a strong showing for Dr. Bawumia, reflecting broad support among delegates. Party leaders and observers described the exercise as largely peaceful, with minimal incidents reported during voting and counting.

Following his victory, Dr. Bawumia thanked delegates for their support and pledged to run a unifying and inclusive campaign leading up to the 2028 general elections.

He also called on all NPP members, including supporters of other aspirants, to rally behind the party to secure a national victory.
