Catholic Bishops Demand 20% Admission Quota for Catholics in Mission Schools

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference is pushing for the implementation of a 20 per cent admission quota for Catholic students in Catholic mission schools.

The Bishops say the decision was reached at the National Catholic Education Forum held in Koforidua in 2025 and is therefore not a new proposal.

In a statement, the Conference said the quota would help maintain a meaningful number of Catholic students in mission schools and support the religious and moral formation that forms part of their identity.

However, the Bishops stressed that the arrangement must be implemented transparently through the appropriate Boards of Governors and diocesan education offices.

They also called for annual audits of the process and insisted that the reservation must not involve the exchange of money.

The Bishops have directed the National Catholic Secretariat’s education office to prepare a plan for implementing the 20 per cent quota across Catholic mission schools.

They are also urging the government and Churches to conclude and sign the long-discussed agreement on the management of mission schools.

According to the Conference, the agreement should clearly define responsibilities for admissions, governance, appointment of head teachers, religious and moral formation, discipline, infrastructure and accountability, while protecting the distinct identity of mission schools.

The Bishops further called for increased investment in schools, teachers, laboratories and learning materials to improve educational quality and reduce pressure on highly sought-after schools.
