Bunkpurugu Police Suspend Funeral Musketry Over Security Concerns
Police cite public safety, accidental injuries and the prevailing security situation as reasons for the temporary ban on gunfire during funerals and public gatherings.

The Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Police Command has suspended the use of muskets and gunfire during funerals, celebrations and other public gatherings in Bunkpurugu Township over growing security concerns.
The directive, issued in a letter dated August 11, 2026, and signed by the District Police Commander, ASP Emmanuel Kofi Sintim, will remain in force until further notice.
According to the Police, the decision was taken to safeguard lives and prevent accidental injuries and deaths amid the prevailing security situation in the area.
While acknowledging that musketry is an important part of the cultural heritage and traditions of the people, the Command stressed that the current circumstances require residents to exercise restraint.
Chiefs, elders, families and other residents have therefore been urged to comply with the directive, with the Police warning that anyone found possessing or using a gun in violation of the order could be arrested and prosecuted.
The Command has also appealed to traditional authorities, assembly members, community leaders and the media to help sensitise residents and support efforts to maintain peace and prevent avoidable incidents.
The suspension of funeral musketry will remain in force until further notice.
