NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has raised concerns about the cost of living in Ghana, arguing that declining inflation does not necessarily reflect the financial pressures facing households.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia cited rent, electricity bills and transport fares as areas where, in his view, many Ghanaians continue to experience increased costs.

He argued that the impact of these expenses should be considered alongside headline inflation when assessing household welfare.

Dr Bawumia said the government should focus not only on macroeconomic indicators but also on the everyday financial challenges faced by households.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions about utility costs. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced in September that electricity and water tariffs would remain unchanged for the fourth quarter of 2026, maintaining third-quarter rates from October 1.

Bawumia has previously outlined proposals aimed at reducing living costs. His policy platform includes measures to reduce public transport costs through electric vehicles, expand rental assistance and increase electricity generation from renewable sources.

He said the NPP is listening to concerns about the cost of living and would seek to implement measures aimed at easing pressure on households if given the opportunity to govern.

The remarks form part of his broader message at the NPP’s national conference, where party delegates gathered in Kumasi for the election of new national executives and discussions on the party’s direction ahead of the 2028 general election.
