Asante Akyem North MP Remains in Dutch Custody Ahead of November Extradition Hearing

The extradition hearing involving the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, has been scheduled for November 18, 2026, according to Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.

Mr Dafeamekpor disclosed that the MP remains in custody in the Netherlands after two separate applications for bail were rejected.

He said the Dutch authorities had declined both the initial bail application and a subsequent appeal.

“The extradition hearing will take place on the 18th of November 2026,” he said.

“He’s still in custody. He’s still in the hands of the Dutch government in Amsterdam. We have done two applications, one substantive, one appeal for his bail, but they all got refused.”

Arrest in Amsterdam

Mr Frimpong was arrested at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in May 2026 after travelling from Ghana.

Parliament subsequently confirmed his detention and indicated that it was engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain further information on the case.

The MP’s arrest was reportedly linked to allegations involving romance scams and money laundering. The allegations remain subject to the legal process.

Parliament prepares for hearing

Mr Dafeamekpor said Parliament is now preparing for the substantive extradition proceedings scheduled for November 18.

“So we are preparing to deal with the substantive hearing of the matter on the 18th of November,” he said.

He added that Parliament was also preparing a statement on the current status of the MP.

The Majority Chief Whip had previously appealed to the media to refrain from publishing unverified information about the case, noting that the legal team was still working to obtain official documentation relating to the MP’s arrest and detention.

The November hearing is expected to determine the next stage of proceedings concerning the request for Mr Frimpong’s extradition to the United States.
