Two armed men have robbed a mobile money vendor at Ziope in the Volta Region, fleeing with nearly GHS 90,000 in cash. One of the suspects fired warning shots to intimidate bystanders during the incident.
The robbery occurred around 6:00 PM on Tuesday, April 7, at a MoMo shop near the Agape Filling Station. Ms. Mawutor Mensah, the shop owner, said the attackers executed the operation swiftly, taking advantage of the calm in the area at the time.
According to Ms. Mensah, one suspect stood outside firing intermittently to scare off onlookers while the other entered the shop and demanded cash at gunpoint. The pair reportedly escaped on a motorbike parked nearby. She confirmed that neither she nor her staff were physically harmed but described the ordeal as traumatising.
The Ziope Police Station has confirmed the incident. An officer, speaking anonymously, said investigations are ongoing, with no arrests made so far, and appealed to the public to provide credible information to aid in apprehending the suspects.
Residents expressed shock, noting that Ziope is usually peaceful, and called for increased police patrols, particularly during evenings. They also advised mobile money vendors to adopt safety measures, such as limiting cash on hand, installing surveillance cameras, and conducting transactions in secure environments.
The robbery adds to a growing number of attacks on mobile money operators in the country, raising concerns about vendor safety and the need for stronger community and law enforcement collaboration.
