Pong Tamale Senior High School in the Northern Region has recorded a fire outbreak in its girls’ dormitory, becoming the latest second-cycle institution to face such an incident and intensifying nationwide concerns over fire safety in boarding schools.
Preliminary reports indicate the blaze started in the washrooms, sparking panic among students. Emergency responders were alerted promptly, and firefighters from the Savelugu Fire Station were deployed, successfully containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to other dormitories and academic facilities.
The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, with school authorities investigating the impact on students’ belongings and school property.
This incident follows a series of recent fires in northern schools. On Monday, February 2, a dormitory fire at Tolon Senior High School displaced several students and destroyed personal effects.
Earlier, on January 28, the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) saw a major blaze affect nearly 900 female students after flames ravaged their dormitories.
The recurring fires have alarmed parents, education stakeholders, and the general public, prompting urgent calls for stricter fire safety measures and preventative interventions in boarding schools across the country.
