Police in Akatsi have intercepted a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis at Deti in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region.

According to sources, the operation took place on Thursday, May 21, 2026, after officers acted on intelligence and stopped a Ford vehicle with registration number VR 38-26 carrying 1,183 parcels of the suspected substance.

The driver reportedly fled after noticing police pursuit, abandoning the vehicle at Deti before escaping. He is currently on the run.

The vehicle and the suspected narcotics have since been conveyed to the Akatsi Police Station for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Although police are yet to issue an official statement, the seizure is part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the area.

The latest operation comes just weeks after a similar incident in Akatsi, where police intercepted a Renault Trafic vehicle carrying 732 parcels of suspected cannabis at Adeheta while en route to Akatsi.

In that earlier case, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers to avoid arrest before the vehicle was impounded.

Residents have praised the police for their continued vigilance and urged authorities to sustain the clampdown on illegal drug activities in the municipality.
