Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has said the government is taking a careful approach to the proposed Accra–Kumasi expressway project to prevent cost overruns and design errors that could delay its execution.

The minister explained that detailed feasibility studies, design work, and costing for the nearly 200-kilometre highway are being finalised before contractors are mobilised to the site.

“This cautious approach ensures that when we announce the final project cost, it reflects the true scope of work, avoiding future revisions or unexpected budget increases,” Mr. Agbodza said.

He emphasised that rushing the process without thorough technical preparation could create avoidable financial and logistical challenges during construction.

The minister provided a timeline, noting that the final draft of the feasibility, design, and costing documents is expected between May and June 2026, with a possible extension to July or August to address any omissions or additional requirements.

“We are expecting the final draft around May or June, but we are giving ourselves until July or August in case something needs to be added or corrected,” he said.

Once the preparatory work is complete, the Roads and Highways Ministry expects the project to commence by mid-year, following procurement and the award of contracts.
