Residents of Adankrangya in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region have appealed to the government and the Municipal Assembly to provide toilet facilities for the community to help end open defecation.
According to the residents, the lack of adequate toilet facilities has compelled many people to resort to open defecation, a situation they say poses a serious threat to public health and sanitation.
They lamented that the situation is particularly worrying due to the proximity of a refuse disposal site to the community, where some residents reportedly engage in open defecation.
The residents said the poor state of the refuse disposal site, coupled with the improper disposal of human waste, has created an unhygienic environment that could expose residents to diseases.
They are therefore calling on the relevant authorities to construct public toilet facilities and improve sanitation management in the community to safeguard the health of residents.
The residents also raised concerns over the lack of potable drinking water, which they said continues to affect their daily activities.
They appealed to the government, the Municipal Assembly and other stakeholders to provide a reliable source of potable water and address the community’s sanitation challenges.
They stressed that urgent intervention in water and sanitation infrastructure would significantly improve living conditions and help prevent outbreaks of waterborne and sanitation-related diseases in Adankrangya.
