Police in the Assin North District of the Central Region have rescued a suspected attacker from an angry mob after he was allegedly assaulted by residents over an attempted attack on a young cocoa farmer.

The incident occurred on Thursday at Assin Yaw Attah, where the suspect, believed to be in his early 20s, allegedly trespassed onto a cocoa farm and attempted to assault a 19-year-old farmer, identified only as Baba, with a stick.

According to eyewitnesses, the farmer raised an alarm, prompting residents to rush to the scene. The suspect was reportedly overpowered, tied to a pole and severely beaten by the crowd.

The assault was halted after a local opinion leader intervened, allowing officers from the Assin Breku Police Station to arrive and rescue the suspect.

The injured suspect was transported to the Assin Praso Presbyterian Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

Assin North District Police Commander, Superintendent Eric Yao Avudzi, condemned the growing incidents of mob justice in the district, warning that taking the law into one’s own hands undermines the country’s justice system.

He noted that the latest incident follows other cases of mob violence in the area, including one in which a suspect was allegedly killed and an attempt made to burn the body.

Superintendent Avudzi appealed to the public to hand over suspected offenders to the police instead of resorting to mob attacks.

Police say preliminary interactions with the suspect suggest he may be suffering from a mental health condition, as he gave inconsistent responses during questioning and displayed behaviour that raised concerns about his mental state. Residents also told investigators they had recently seen him wandering around the community exhibiting signs of mental instability.

Investigations are ongoing into both the alleged attempted assault and the mob attack. Police are also working to establish the suspect’s identity, locate his relatives, and identify those involved in the assault.
