The Savannah Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has constituted a seven-member committee to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a newborn baby from the East Gonja Municipal Hospital in Salaga.

The committee, set up by the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. John Ekow Otoo, has been tasked with determining the circumstances surrounding the incident, recommending appropriate disciplinary actions, and proposing measures to prevent a recurrence.

In a statement issued on June 24, the Directorate revealed that health workers responsible for the care of the baby before her disappearance have been interdicted and are currently facing criminal prosecution.

“The staff responsible for the baby’s care before her disappearance have been arraigned before the Tamale High Court and are currently facing criminal proceedings,” the statement noted.

According to the GHS, the interdictions were carried out in line with its Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures and will remain in effect until the conclusion of the court case.

The Directorate said it is collaborating closely with the Ghana Police Service in efforts to trace the missing baby and has appealed to the public to volunteer any information that could aid investigations.

As part of the nationwide search efforts, hospitals, child welfare clinics, and Community Health Officers across the country have been placed on alert to report any suspicious mother-and-baby pairings.

The GHS further disclosed that psychological support has been arranged for the baby’s parents and expressed sympathy to the family, assuring the public of regular updates on the progress of investigations.

The newborn reportedly went missing from the East Gonja Municipal Hospital on June 10, 2026.

Two midwives attached to the facility, Frank Atanga, 52, and Mariam Mohammed, 32, were arrested and remanded into police custody on June 12 over their alleged involvement in the case. They have been charged with conspiracy to steal and abduction.
