A funeral ceremony at Ayanfuri turned tragic after Nana Kwabena Okyere, Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area, reportedly died following an accidental gunshot wound during customary funeral rites.

The incident occurred on Friday, May 9, 2026, during the funeral of Abusua Panyin Akwasi Kwateng in the Diaso District.

According to reports, the chief was handling a pump-action gun as part of the traditional rites when it accidentally discharged, striking him in the abdomen.

He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

His body has been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary as police commence investigations into the incident.

The tragic development has thrown the Ayanfuri community into mourning, with residents and traditional leaders describing it as heartbreaking and unfortunate.

The incident has also renewed public concern over the use of firearms during funerals and traditional ceremonies in Ghana, amid calls for stricter safety measures during cultural events.
