Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has urged President John Dramani Mahama and the Energy and Green Transition Minister to take immediate steps to resolve ongoing power outages, warning of their impact on students preparing for major national exams. In a Facebook post on Monday, April 27, Awuku highlighted growing concerns over erratic electricity supply, noting that it is disrupting studies and increasing anxiety among candidates sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and those preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). He described the return of frequent outages as troubling, emphasizing that this is a crucial academic period for students. According to him, unreliable power is making it difficult for learners to focus, particularly during evening revision hours. Awuku stressed that while exams will proceed regardless, students deserve a stable and supportive environment to prepare effectively. He called on authorities to act swiftly, stating that ensuring consistent electricity during this time is the least that can be done. Beyond education, he noted that the situation is also affecting businesses, entrepreneurs, and small-scale workers, with frustration mounting across the country. His remarks come amid renewed reports of intermittent power supply—often referred to as “dumsor”—a recurring issue that has historically disrupted homes, businesses, and schools. Stakeholders in the education sector and parents have long warned that such instability during exam periods places undue pressure on candidates. Awuku’s appeal adds to increasing public calls for a lasting solution, especially as thousands of students prepare for key national examinations in the weeks ahead.
