A highly anticipated biopic about Michael Jackson is set to hit cinemas, with industry observers predicting it could become one of the biggest music films ever—despite ongoing debate over how it handles the late star’s complex legacy.
Titled Michael, the film is produced by Graham King, who previously enjoyed massive success with Bohemian Rhapsody—the Oscar-winning biopic about Freddie Mercury. That film overcame production setbacks to gross over $900 million worldwide, setting high expectations for this new project.
However, Michael faces a more complicated challenge: portraying the life of a global icon whose career was shadowed by allegations of child abuse. While Jackson reached an out-of-court settlement in 1994 and was acquitted in a 2005 criminal trial, the accusations remain a sensitive and divisive part of his story.
Lawyers for Jackson’s estate maintain his innocence, insisting that legal rulings and evidence support that position. Still, critics argue that any biopic risks oversimplifying or omitting controversial aspects of his life.

The film reportedly concludes with his 1988 Bad tour, avoiding deeper exploration of later controversies. Significant reshoots were carried out, and its release was delayed to 2026, partly due to these revisions.
While some critics question whether the film presents a balanced narrative, others believe its celebratory tone could boost its commercial appeal. There are also indications that additional material may be developed into a sequel, potentially exploring other aspects of Jackson’s life.
