7 Dead, 4 Trapped After Galamsey Pit Collapses at Asaman Tamfoe

Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead after a galamsey pit collapsed at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.
Four others are feared trapped underground as rescue teams continue efforts to reach them following the tragic incident on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The collapse reportedly occurred at about 11:00 p.m. while the miners were working inside the pit in search of gold.
According to sources, two miners who were outside the pit at the time of the collapse rushed back to the community to seek help.
Residents subsequently mobilised a search and rescue team and alerted the Police and other emergency agencies.
The deceased have been identified as Mogya, Kapo, Togo, Nfate, Davido, Lucifer and Fatee.
Rescue teams worked through the night and successfully retrieved the remains of seven of the 11 miners believed to have been trapped beneath the debris.
Five of the deceased are reportedly residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two are said to be members of the Asaman Tamfoe community.
Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, Ghana National Ambulance Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and community volunteers are currently at the scene.
The rescue operation is ongoing as teams continue efforts to locate and retrieve the four miners still feared trapped underground.
The incident has left residents and families in shock as the community awaits further developments from the ongoing rescue operation.
