Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has predicted that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be voted back into opposition in 2028, accusing the administration of failing to deliver tangible economic relief to Ghanaians.
Speaking in Parliament immediately following Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review on Thursday, July 23, Afenyo-Markin strongly criticized the government’s economic performance, warning that voters will judge the party on their everyday financial realities.
“The good news is that you are on your way to opposition. So you should begin thinking,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “You see, the true measure of a finance minister is not how much he spends.”
Discrepancies and Sector Omissions
The Minority Leader challenged the administration’s fiscal disclosures, pointing to alleged internal inconsistencies regarding funds disbursed for agricultural initiatives.
“His deputy minister told the nation that 1.6 billion was released to the Agric minister. Today, he says only 1.1 billion,” Afenyo-Markin alleged.
He further criticized the budget review for failing to outline dedicated relief measures for the cocoa sector, arguing that the nation’s four million cocoa farmers continue to face severe financial strain under Dr. Ato Forson’s oversight. Afenyo-Markin concluded that despite the government’s optimistic macroeconomic presentations, public dissatisfaction over rising costs and limited employment will ultimately dictate the 2028 elections.
