Speaker Alban Bagbin orders MPs to follow strict government regulations requiring written permits for police escorts and vehicle sirens.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin, has directed Members of Parliament to strictly comply with a new government regulation governing the use of vehicle sirens and police escort services, warning that violators risk police arrest and enforcement action.
Addressing the House on Tuesday, Speaker Bagbin revealed that his office received an official communication from the Minister for the Interior asking Parliament to notify all lawmakers and Parliamentary Service staff about the tightened regulations, which aim to restore accountability in the use of state security privileges.
Strict Permit Requirements for Sirens and Escorts
Under the new directive, unauthorized installation and activation of sirens on either official or private vehicles are strictly prohibited without explicit written authorization from the Minister for the Interior.
“No individual may install or use a siren on either an official or private vehicle without prior written authorisation from the Minister for the Interior,” the directive specifies.
Additionally, lawmakers and public officials are barred from deploying police escorts unless formally approved in writing by the Interior Minister or the Inspector General of Police (IGP) acting on the minister’s behalf.
The directive forms part of a broader push to curb road abuse by public officials and ensure state security assets are deployed lawfully.
