Tragedy at Akyem Hemang: Youth Shot Dead by NAIMOS Operatives During Community Clash

A young man identified as Douglas Acheampong has reportedly been shot and killed by personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Akyem Hemang in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.
The tragic incident took place around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in the center of the community. Reports indicate that Acheampong was shot at close range during the encounter.
According to sources from the community, the incident began when military personnel passing through the area on an operation spotted a resident, Kwaku Kwebia, an immigration officer, talking on his phone in plain clothes.
The officers, who were traveling in four V8 Land Cruisers and a pickup truck, stopped and accused Kwaku of acting as an informant because he was on a call. They demanded to see his phone.
Kwaku Kwebia denied the accusation, explaining he was simply speaking to his brother. He resisted handing over his phone, which reportedly angered the officers. They then attempted to force him into one of their vehicles.
The situation drew the attention of other residents, including Kwaku’s sister, who tried to prevent her brother from being taken away by blocking the vehicle’s entrance.
In the midst of the commotion, Acheampong, who had joined efforts to stop Kwaku from being detained, got into a heated confrontation with the officers. The officers responded by firing several warning shots to disperse the gathering of community members.
As residents tried to flee the scene amidst the warning shots, Acheampong was allegedly shot at close range from behind. The bullet entered through his back and exited through his stomach, inflicting severe injuries.
Community members quickly rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who are now planning protests demanding justice for Acheampong’s family. The community’s anger underscores the need for accountability and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
