Seven Suspects Arrested Over Deadly New Winneba Attack

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection with the deadly violence that erupted in New Winneba on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
The attack, reportedly linked to a land dispute, left three people dead and 19 others injured.
According to the police, the violence started around 10:40 a.m. when a group of about 300 people, allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed New Winneba Township.
The group, believed to have come from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, allegedly attacked residents and vandalised shops, stores and properties belonging to residents of the area.
Deputy Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Isaac Entie, confirmed the arrest of the seven suspects and said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals believed to have participated in the attack.
Initially, about 15 injured victims, including a police officer, were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment. The police have since confirmed that the number of injured persons has risen to 19.
Following the violence, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
The Inspector-General of Police also deployed additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to reinforce security operations in New Winneba.
The police say the situation is now under control and have assured residents that security measures remain in place to maintain peace and order while investigations continue.
