Richards ‘Devastated’ by Manchester City Guilty Verdicts

Richards reacts to City’s financial breaches verdict.

Story Highlights
  • Verdict: City found guilty of financial breaches.
  • Reaction: Richards says he was “devastated.”
  • Charges: Breaches cover 2009-10 to 2017-18.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards says he was “absolutely devastated” after reading the Premier League’s findings that the club breached financial regulations.

An independent commission found that Manchester City used what it described as “sham contracts” involving several commercial partners in an alleged scheme to conceal more than £830 million in funding.

The Premier League confirmed that City were found guilty of all charges relating to alleged financial-rule breaches between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. The club was also found guilty of all but one of the charges concerning its alleged failure to cooperate with the league’s investigation.

City have consistently denied wrongdoing and have until 2 October to appeal the commission’s findings.

Richards, who was part of City’s squad during the period under investigation, said the verdict was particularly difficult for him to process given his personal connection with the club.
