A fire outbreak in the early hours of Thursday, August 27, 2026, has destroyed about 300 wooden structures along the Aboabo Pelele stream at Asawase in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The blaze displaced several families and destroyed homes, shops, and personal belongings. No casualties have been reported.
Preliminary information from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) suggests that a heater reportedly plugged in by a resident to boil water may have triggered the fire, although investigations are ongoing.
Firefighters also faced challenges accessing the area because the wooden structures had blocked available routes. The fire was eventually brought under control at about 7:12 a.m.
One victim said he had stocked his provision store with goods worth about GH¢60,000 just a day before the fire, only for everything to be destroyed.
The affected residents are appealing for urgent assistance as they begin efforts to rebuild their lives and properties.
