President John Dramani Mahama has called for dialogue and respect for national sovereignty following U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning that Iran could be “annihilated” if diplomatic efforts fail.
Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, September 24, 2026, President Mahama said no civilisation should be destroyed and urged world leaders to pursue peaceful solutions to conflicts.
“No human civilisation deserves to be annihilated, certainly not a member state of the United Nations. I believe that dialogue can resolve even the most intractable of problems,” he said.
Trump had used the word “annihilate” during his UN address two days earlier while warning that the United States could take such action against Iran if a peace agreement was not reached.
Although Mahama did not directly mention Trump in the remark, his comments came shortly after the U.S. President’s statement.
Mahama also called for respect for national sovereignty, protection of civilians and unhindered humanitarian access.
He further used his address to advocate for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council, reforms to the global financial system, reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade and greater African control over the processing of critical minerals.
