MTN Ghana to Deploy New Spectrum to Accelerate 5G Expansion

US$202m spectrum acquisition expected to boost network capacity, 5G coverage and home connectivity across Ghana.

Story Highlights
  • MTN Ghana secures US$202m in new spectrum.
  • 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands allocated.
  • Investment to accelerate 5G and home connectivity.

MTN Ghana is set to deploy newly awarded 5G spectrum valued at US$202 million, alongside its existing spectrum holdings, as the telecommunications company moves to expand network capacity and improve service quality across the country.

The additional spectrum is expected to support growing demand for high-speed connectivity while accelerating the expansion of 5G mobile services and home broadband connectivity.

The development follows notification from the National Communications Authority (NCA) that MTN Ghana has been awarded spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands for 5G and mobile broadband services.

The licences will be valid for 15 years. Under the allocation, MTN Ghana will receive two 20 MHz lots in the 700 MHz band and 150 MHz in the 3 GHz band.

MTN Ghana is expected to pay a total of US$202 million for the spectrum, comprising US$100.9 million for the 700 MHz allocation and US$101.1 million for the 3 GHz allocation.

The company said it is finalising the formal requirements and payment obligations associated with the licence acquisition. It added that the spectrum payments have already been incorporated into its equity free cash flow outlook.

Boosting Network Capacity

MTN Ghana said the newly acquired spectrum would complement its existing spectrum resources and provide additional capacity as demand for data and high-speed connectivity continues to rise.

The company expects the investment to strengthen network performance, improve service quality and enhance the overall customer experience.

“Following the issuance of the spectrum licences, the Company will deploy the 5G spectrum in addition to its existing spectrum stock, to strengthen network capacity, enhance service quality, and improve customer experience across Ghana,” the company said.

Supporting 5G and Home Connectivity

MTN Ghana said the additional spectrum would also play an important role in accelerating the growth of 5G mobile services and advancing its home connectivity plans.

The increased capacity is expected to enable the operator to support more high-speed connections while accommodating rising data traffic from households and businesses.

The investment represents a significant expansion of MTN Ghana’s spectrum resources and is expected to strengthen the company’s ability to scale up 5G services as demand for faster and more reliable connectivity increases.

MTN Ghana said it would continue to update the market on material developments as it completes the licensing process and progresses with the deployment of the newly awarded spectrum and high-speed 5G services.
