Manchester United monitoring Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni amid midfield rebuild plans

Manchester United have identified Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni as one of several international options they are tracking as they prepare to strengthen their midfield in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The club’s recruitment focus is expected to shift heavily towards midfield after last season’s emphasis on attacking reinforcements and the goalkeeper position. United are prioritising players who can add control and physicality to the centre of the pitch.

Alongside Tchouaméni, Premier League-based targets such as Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Carlos Baleba (Brighton), and Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) have also been monitored. However, concerns have been raised internally about Wharton’s stylistic overlap with Kobbie Mainoo, who is close to agreeing a new contract at Old Trafford.

United are also casting their net abroad, with Tchouaméni among the standout names under consideration. The 26-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2022 after previously attracting interest from United, choosing instead to move from Monaco. Since then, he has established himself as a key figure in Madrid’s midfield, making 191 appearances and scoring seven goals.

Tchouaméni remains under contract until 2028, and Real Madrid are reportedly interested in extending his deal. However, following a disappointing season that could end without silverware, the Spanish club may consider offers if a significant bid is made.

United’s improved league position has strengthened their financial outlook, with Champions League qualification within reach after a strong late-season push. A win over Brentford would put them on the verge of securing a return to Europe’s top competition.

Squad changes are also expected to free up wage space, with departures such as Casemiro and Jadon Sancho reducing the club’s payroll. Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over Marcus Rashford’s future, with Barcelona holding an option to sign him for €30m before the June deadline.

United’s midfield rebuild is expected to be one of the defining priorities of the summer window as the club looks to close the gap on domestic and European rivals.
