- Teachers’ unions demand concrete action on outstanding issues.
President John Mahama has directed government officials to take all necessary steps to resolve the ongoing nationwide teachers’ strike and ensure pre-tertiary teachers return to the classroom.
Government spokesperson and Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed that the President had been briefed on the impact of the industrial action and had ordered immediate efforts to resolve the dispute.
According to Mr Ofosu, engagements involving the relevant government institutions are already underway, with government hopeful that the impasse will be resolved within days.
The strike, involving the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), has disrupted teaching and learning across pre-tertiary schools.
The government spokesperson explained that one of the key issues being addressed is a gap between information from the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Statistical Service concerning affected teachers.
He said government remains committed to paying teachers affected by the outstanding issues and resolving discrepancies in the information provided by the various institutions.
Mr Ofosu added that the Education Ministry, Finance Ministry and Controller and Accountant-General’s Department are currently working to resolve the matter, with presidential intervention available if the ongoing engagements reach a deadlock.
The teacher unions have previously insisted that they want concrete action, including payment of outstanding arrears and implementation of agreed conditions, before calling off the strike.
