Govt to Begin Payment of 17-Month Teacher Arrears in May

Government sets phased payment plan to clear 17-month salary arrears beginning May 2026

Story Highlights
  • Government will begin clearing 17-month salary arrears for teachers in May 2026 through a phased schedule
  • Affected teachers will receive four months’ arrears each month until the backlog is fully cleared
  • The decision follows protests by the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers to the Finance Ministry

The government has assured the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers that it will begin clearing their 17-month salary arrears through a structured payment plan starting May 2026.

The assurance comes after the group staged a protest march to the Ministry of Finance, where they submitted a petition over what they describe as prolonged delays in the payment of their salaries.

The teachers had earlier presented a similar petition to the Presidency, which was received by a presidential staffer, Dr Samuel Ayeh, who assured them their concerns would be addressed.

Addressing the demonstrators at the Finance Ministry, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko reaffirmed government’s commitment to resolving the matter, stating that processes had already been initiated to begin payments.

He explained that the arrears would be paid in phases, starting in May, with teachers receiving four months’ worth of arrears each month until the full backlog is cleared.

According to him, “Even though the Finance Minister is out of town, he instructed me to conclude the processes and I wrote to Controller to start the payment of your arrears. That payment will start from May. In May, you will receive four months of arrears, June you will receive another four months, July another four months until the payments are concluded.”

The move is expected to bring relief to many affected teachers who have long expressed frustration over the delay in receiving their salaries.
