  • Farmers await new season price

The government is expected to announce a new producer price for cocoa today for the 2026/2027 crop season, with cocoa farmers awaiting details of how much they will receive for their beans.

The announcement comes as efforts continue to secure funding for the new cocoa season and address liquidity challenges affecting Ghana’s cocoa sector.

As part of preparations, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has been engaging major international cocoa trading companies in London.

The discussions focused on the newly passed Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 2026, a proposed financing framework for the cocoa sector and preparations for the 2026/2027 cocoa season.

COCOBOD and the trading companies also discussed plans to raise funds through commercial paper and bond financing, as well as liquidity arrangements to support the upcoming season.

The engagements further considered private-sector financing support for Licensed Buying Companies and Ghana’s preparedness to comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation.

For the 2025/2026 light crop season, the government maintained the existing producer price despite a decline in international cocoa prices.

The price was maintained at GH¢1,241.76 per 30-kilogramme load for Grade I and II cocoa beans, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per 64-kilogramme gross bag.

This translated to GH¢41,392 per tonne, based on 16 bags.

The new producer price is expected to determine the returns cocoa farmers receive during the 2026/2027 season, with implications for farmer incomes, cocoa purchasing operations and the financial position of the sector.
