Government Reallocates GH¢400m to Procure High-Occupancy Buses for Public Transport

The government has reallocated GH¢400 million to purchase high-occupancy buses for state-run transport operators in a bid to mitigate long passenger queues and boost urban mobility nationwide.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson explained that the funds will directly support fleet expansion for major state entities.
“Government is committed to improving urban mobility and providing safe, reliable, and affordable public transport for Ghanaians,” Dr. Forson stated. “To this end, government is reallocating GH¢400 million for the acquisition of high occupancy buses to strengthen the fleet of state-owned transport companies, including Metro Mass Transit and the State Transport Company.”
Dr. Forson noted that the fleet expansion will target high-demand urban and intercity routes to alleviate peak-hour congestion and offer commuters a viable alternative to private transport.
The budget allocation follows updates from Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe in May 2026 regarding a separate batch of 100 newly acquired government buses. Minister Nikpe confirmed that the vehicles were undergoing final registration, safety inspections, servicing, and driver training prior to immediate deployment across key routes.
