Severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has left dozens dead in Luanda and other parts of Angola, as emergency teams intensify efforts to manage the crisis.

Initial reports from emergency services indicate that at least 29 people have died in Luanda and Benguela, while more than 34,000 residents have been impacted. However, figures from Cuanza-Sul Province suggest the death toll could be as high as 33.

The floods have caused extensive damage, destroying homes and key infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and power lines. A collapsed bridge pillar along the Hâlo River has further disrupted travel between Benguela and Huambo Province.

President João Lourenço has expressed sympathy to affected families, describing the situation as urgent and stressing the need for swift rescue operations and medical assistance. He confirmed that government agencies have been deployed to provide relief.

Authorities say most fatalities occurred in Benguela, with others recorded in Luanda. At least 17 people have sustained injuries, and thousands have been forced to flee their homes.

Rescue efforts have been complicated by widespread flooding, collapsed structures, and damaged utilities, including water systems, as well as blocked roads.

Flooding remains a recurring issue in the region during the rainy season. In 2023, similar incidents in Angola resulted in 30 deaths and affected more than 116,000 people nationwide.
