The Head of Military Intelligence for Eastern Libya’s Libyan National Army (LNA) was killed on Monday after an explosive device detonated inside his car outside his home in Benghazi, two security sources told Reuters.
Brigadier Fowzi Mansouri was killed in the evening blast in the Hawari area of the city, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The sources did not identify those responsible for the attack or provide further details about the explosive device.
The killing underscores the continuing security challenges facing Libya, where rival political administrations and armed groups continue to wield significant influence despite a 2020 ceasefire that brought an end to major fighting.
Libya has remained divided since 2014, when rival factions emerged following the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi.
The LNA, commanded by military strongman Khalifa Haftar, controls large parts of eastern and southern Libya and is aligned with authorities based in Benghazi.
The internationally recognised Government of National Unity, meanwhile, is based in the capital, Tripoli, and controls much of western Libya.
