Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to swiftly investigate the deadly violence in New Winneba and arrest those responsible.
Three people were killed and 15 others injured after a group allegedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed New Winneba and attacked residents.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, September 1, the Effutu MP questioned how the group could mobilise and allegedly enter the community armed with guns, machetes and clubs in broad daylight without being intercepted by security personnel.
He urged the police to demonstrate their authority by identifying the perpetrators and ensuring that they face the law.
Afenyo-Markin also questioned whether adequate intelligence was available ahead of the incident, particularly because there is a police station in the area.
He called on the Central Regional Police Command and Police Headquarters to work together to identify those who organised and participated in the violence.
The Minority Leader further urged authorities to investigate the source of the weapons allegedly used during the attack.
He cautioned residents against revenge attacks, stressing that nobody should take the law into their own hands.
According to him, the priority must be to arrest and prosecute those responsible while restoring lasting peace in New Winneba and surrounding communities.
