GJA Orders Rerun of Ashanti Region Chairperson Elections Over Irregularities
EDAC cites irregularities including unapproved voter list and cross-regional voting as basis for rerun

- GJA cancels Ashanti Region election result due to voter irregularities
- Rerun to be held within 14 working days with new transparency measures
- Election was decided by one vote; credibility concerns prompted decision
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called for a rerun of the Ashanti Region Chairperson elections following the discovery of serious electoral irregularities during the June 30, 2025 polls.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 24, the Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) announced that a fresh election is necessary to uphold the integrity and fairness of the process, citing critical procedural violations and concerns about voter eligibility.
“Our decision is based on substantial irregularities before and during the polls,” the committee said. “Notably, a supplementary voters list was created on election day, and a voter from Greater Accra was allowed to vote in the Ashanti Region.”
Given that the election result was determined by a single vote, EDAC concluded that the irregularities may have affected the outcome and warranted a new vote.
New Directives for the Rerun:
-
Elections must be re-conducted within 14 working days of the announcement.
-
A complete list of eligible voters must be published in newspapers and shared with candidates at least 3 working days before the vote.
-
No supplementary voter list will be allowed.
The EDAC encouraged all GJA members to actively monitor and participate in the rerun to ensure transparency and trust in the electoral process.
