Bawumia Raises Alarm Over Ghana’s International Drug Trafficking Links

NPP flagbearer calls for a bipartisan probe into Ghana-linked drug shipments

NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has raised concerns about recent drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana, arguing that the development could damage the country’s international reputation.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, Dr Bawumia called for greater transparency and a broader investigation into the networks behind drug shipments associated with Ghana.

He argued that simply arresting individuals involved in drug trafficking would not be sufficient to address the wider problem. According to him, a bipartisan parliamentary committee should be established to investigate those responsible for the consignments and determine how the operations are being carried out.

Dr Bawumia contrasted the situation with what he said occurred under previous NPP administrations, arguing that drug-related arrests in Ghana helped prevent consignments from reaching other countries and thereby avoided international embarrassment.

He further claimed that under the current NDC administration, some consignments linked to Ghana have been intercepted abroad after leaving the country.

Dr Bawumia is therefore calling on the government to support a bipartisan investigation into the issue, saying a comprehensive inquiry would help establish responsibility and protect Ghana’s international reputation.

His comments came as the NPP held its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, where more than 7,000 delegates gathered for the election of national party officers.
