NPP Defers Constitutional Amendments to Next National Conference

Party defers proposed constitutional changes to allow delegates more time for consideration

Story Highlights
  • Amendments postponed
  • Fewer than 20 proposals expected
  • Leader designation among key issues
  • New executives to be elected

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has postponed consideration of proposed amendments to its constitution until its next national conference, citing time constraints at its ongoing National Delegates Conference.

The Acting National Chairman of the NPP, Joseph Danquah Smith, announced the decision on Saturday, October 3, 2026, as delegates gathered to elect new national executives.

He explained that the limited time available would make it difficult for delegates to properly consider the proposed constitutional changes while also conducting the national executive elections.

The amendments will therefore be tabled at a subsequent national conference, allowing delegates sufficient time to examine and deliberate on the proposals before taking decisions.

The proposed changes are expected to number fewer than 20. They will include proposals that were not adopted at the party’s previous constitutional amendment conference held in Accra in January 2026, as well as new proposals that the party believes require further consideration.

One of the key issues expected to feature in the proposed amendments concerns the designation of the leader of the party.

At its January 31 conference, the NPP introduced a provision stating that the National Chairman shall be the leader of the party at all material times.

The Acting National Chairman said the party would return to the proposed constitutional changes at its next conference, while the current gathering remains focused on electing the new national executives.

The decision effectively separates the constitutional review process from the ongoing elections, giving delegates more time to consider the proposed changes at a future conference.
