President John Dramani Mahama has directed that a meeting be held with the leadership of striking teacher unions to discuss their demands and the implications for the national compensation budget.
The meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 2, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ministry of Education in Accra.
An invitation signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, has been extended to key government officials and heads of relevant agencies.
Those invited include the Ministers for Finance, Employment and Education, as well as the Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Controller and Accountant-General, and the Directors-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Ghana Education Service and Ghana TVET Service.
The leadership of the teacher unions has also been invited to the meeting.
According to the invitation, participants are expected to provide relevant information to support discussions on the fiscal implications of the unions’ demands. They have also been urged to treat the meeting as a priority and attend promptly.
The meeting comes amid an ongoing strike by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
The unions began the industrial action on September 25, 2026, citing concerns over unpaid promotion arrears, delays in negotiating a new Collective Agreement and the non-implementation of the Deprived Area Allowance.
