Manhyia South MP seeks civil redress over alleged defamatory statements

Accra, September 28, 2026 — Manhyia South Member of Parliament and lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, says he has filed a writ of summons against Akwatia MP Bernard Bediako Baidoo and broadcaster Abubakar Alhassan, popularly known as Blakk Rasta, over what he describes as false and defamatory statements concerning him.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 28, Mr Awuah said he had chosen to seek redress through the civil courts rather than pursue criminal prosecution over the alleged publication of false information.
The legal action comes amid an ongoing controversy involving the MP and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Mr Awuah also used the statement to reaffirm his commitment to advocating for a woman he says is a mother of three minor children and who was allegedly taken into custody by state security agents late on Saturday. He said she remains in police custody.
The MP accused the government of attempting to intimidate and silence him in connection with his efforts to secure the woman’s rights. He said the alleged attempt had failed and that he would continue to pursue the matter through lawful and constitutional means.
“I remain committed to pursuing this matter through lawful and constitutional means and will not be deterred from seeking justice for her and her children,” he stated.
According to reports, the controversy follows an attempted arrest of Mr Awuah by officials of EOCO while he was seeking the release of two women whom he represents as legal counsel. EOCO has maintained that its officers sought to take the MP into custody as part of an ongoing investigation and said he had previously been invited to assist with the inquiry.
Mr Awuah has disputed EOCO’s account, maintaining that the investigation concerns SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited, which his law firm represents, and that representatives of the firm had already engaged with investigators.
In his latest statement, however, the MP focused on the civil action against Mr Baidoo and Blakk Rasta, as well as his continued commitment to the legal matter involving the woman and her children.
The statement did not specify the particular publications or comments by the two defendants that form the basis of the lawsuit. Mr Awuah said he intends to continue pursuing the matter through the appropriate legal channels.
